Mill Ford School

Our Community

Our school community consists of pupils, staff, parents and carers, as well as health professionals, social workers and a whole host of visiting professionals who enrich and enhance the children’s lives. The school is on two sites, with two classes based in mobile classrooms at Ernesettle Community Primary School, just across the road from the main school. The primary school is currently being rebuilt, and from September 2008 we will have three classes in the new attractive building.

Our wider community extends out into Ernesettle. Pupils regularly visit local shops and West Park  library, where staff are currently providing story-telling sessions especially for our older PMLD children. Two local factories, Toshiba and Vi-Spring, are very supportive of the school. Both companies have donated generously to raffles etc and have welcomed pupils to the factories. An ex-pupil works for Vi-Spring and the canteen at Toshiba is regularly decorated with our children’s artwork.

We have the use of two minibuses during the school day, so the children’s experiences can extend into the wider community of Plymouth city and the surrounding countryside. Regular visits are made to supermarkets and cafes for social skills, to places of historic and geographical interest in order to support topic work and language development, and to parks and public spaces to encourage healthy living and physical development.
